NAME:

Carmel Oostveen

WHERE DO YOU WORK?

Asbestos and Dust Diseases Research Institute (ADDRI)

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT ROLE?

Mesothelioma Support Coordinator

WHAT LED YOU TO WORKING WITHIN THE AREA OF LUNG CANCER?

My experience and interest in working with surgical patients diagnosed with lung cancer, both in hospital and as practice nurse for Cardiothoracic surgeons, led me to joining ADDRI in May 2023 as a Mesothelioma Support Coordinator.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE?

Building strong relationships with both the patients and their carers that enable honest, open and often very interesting conversations about all aspects of their illness. Being able to address individual concerns that improve the quality of life of our patients, and raising awareness of mesothelioma and the challenges this diagnosis presents to families and clinicians.

WHAT DO YOU FIND THE MOST CHALLENGING ABOUT YOUR ROLE?

The inequality in how care and treatment is funded due to the nature of asbestos exposure and the difficulties accessing assistance faced by our patients who live in rural areas.  The life-limiting nature of the illness, limited treatment options and lack of understanding about mesothelioma in the community. There remains an inequality in how care and treatment can be funded that can be impactful, purely due to the nature of asbestos exposure.

WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE INTERESTED IN WORKING IN THE FIELD OF LUNG CANCER?

Working in the field of lung cancer is interesting and rewarding.  It is a privilege to meet patients and families with rich and interesting life stories and be part of their journey.

WHAT HOBBIES / ACTIVITIES DO YOU ENJOY OUTSIDE OF WORK?

I enjoy travel and swimming. My swimwear is always packed and ready for a dip in both pool and open water no matter where I go.
